A few weeks ago, while lounging on the couch with my hubby and watching The Lion King, snacking on chips, the kids fast asleep, we received a text from my mother-in-law. My father-in-law had been to the doctor and they practically told them that he was gluten intolerant.
Since being in NZ, we have noticed how large this lifestyle is in comparison with the type of lifestyles in South Africa. I recently even did a Vegan Cake as well (have a look at the orders tab;) So being curious and concerned, I did a bit of research as to know more about what it means being Gluten intolerant.
Gluten is a protein found primarily in wheat, barley and rye. If a person has a gluten intolerance, this protein can cause digestive problems such as gassiness and abdominal pain. Common foods that contain gluten are pastas, bread, crackers, seasonings and mixes. Ok, so in our household, we indulge in these kinds of foods. Perhaps, a bit too much hehe.
So, we decided to go over for a visit to check-up on Dad. On the way, we stopped at the shop and I popped in to get nibbles for Dad. First of all, I was so impressed as to how much gluten-free products there was on the shelf. You could basically buy any "normal" food but in Gluten-free. After tasting a cookie (or 3) that was gluten-free, I was quite surprised as to how light my tummy felt after it.
So now, whenever we get snacks for Friday movie-night at home, they are gluten-free (New Zealand Kettle Korn Salted and Sweet Popcorn is my favourite!!) Although we have the choice of eating all kinds of food, we choose to support our family's new lifestyle habit. It promotes good health for everyone as well. The unfortunate thing about these "specialities" are they a bit costly. But just to change certain foods in your pantry, can make a big difference.
